The most environmentally-friendly ferry in UK waters will operate in 2017

On January 14, 2014 French ferry and holiday company, Brittany Ferries, announced that its new cruise-ferry that will be one of the biggest vessels in the world and also the most environmentally-friendly ship in UK waters, will enter service in late spring 2017.

The ship, costing some 270 million euros will be built by STX France in St. Nazaire. It will operate on the route between UK and Spain and replace Brittany Ferries’ current flagship, Pont-Aven, which will move to the Portsmouth-St. Malo route. This new cruise-ferry will be one of the biggest ship in the world, with luxury features such as an indoor swimming pool, two cinemas, restaurants, pet kennels, a quiet reading lounge, an observation area, a sophisticated spa treatment room with panoramic views, two children’s play areas, a high-tech stage area etc. In addition, free Wi-Fi will be available in every cabin and throughout the ship.

This new ferry will benefit not simply the customers but the environment as well because it will be the first ferry from the UK that use liquefied natural gas (LNG). Brittany Ferries and STX France have been co-operating for two years on a study regarding the feasibility of powering a cruise-ferry by LNG.

LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) is natural gas that has been cooled down to minus 162 degrees Celsius (minus 260 degrees Fahrenheit). It is a clear, colourless, non-toxic liquid that can be transported and stored more easily than natural gas because it occupies up to 600 times less space. Natural gas is a fossil fuel that emits about 25% less carbon dioxide during combustion than oil does. The gas burns with a clean flame, emitting neither dust nor soot. It is sulphur-free and is low in nitrogen oxide emissions.

Today natural gas accounts for about 25% of Europe’s energy supply. In the “Energy Roadmap 2050”, the European Commission singles out natural gas as vital to the energy transformation envisioned by 2050.

So, if you want to travel by a luxury and environmentally-friendly ferry, this new ferry of Brittany ferries could be your good choice.
